Health Systems Science
This series provides timely, health systems science content that addresses the needs of Carilion Clinic, Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine, and/or Radford University Carilion faculty and other health professions. Covered content includes health systems science domain-specific material and accompanying teaching/modeling strategies that are imperative for systemic implementation. Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
- Differentiate between adaptive and innovative preferences for generating ideas, utilizing structures, and responding to rules and group norms
- Compare agent of change groups within organizations and teams to identify consensus groups and outliers
- Define precipitating events, pendulum of change, and spiral of change
- Value cognitive diversity to lead and manage change
As a continuation of the 2022 session, “Leveraging Cognitive Diversity in Addressing Complex Health Care Problems,” this presentation will further explore cognitive diversity from the standpoint of organizations and teams. Topics will include cognitive climate of an organization or unit, consensus groups and outliers relative to where ideas originate from, precipitating events and shifts that influence change, and leading and managing through such change. The value of each person’s cognitive style preference in addressing change and related problems is better understood relative to the tasks and people around us, and worthy of discussion.

Enhancing Patient Health Literacy: Universal Health Literacy Approaches
